'To say this series is "empowering" doesn't do it justice. Buy a copy for your daughters, sisters, mums, aunts and nieces - just make sure you buy a copy for your sons, brothers, dads, uncles and nephews, too.' - IndependentThe women who shaped and were erased from our history.Forgotten Women is a new series of books that uncover the lost herstories of influential women who have refused over hundreds of years to accept the hand they've been dealt and, as a result, have formed, shaped and changed the course of our futures. From leaders and scientists to artists and writers, the fascinating stories of these women that time forgot are now celebrated, putting their achievements firmly back on the map.The Writers celebrates 48* unsung genius female writers from throughout history and across the world, including the Girl Stunt Reporters, who went undercover to write exposés on the ills of 1890s America; Aemilia Lanyer, the contemporary of Shakespeare whose polemical re-writing of The Bible's Passion Story is regarded as one of the earliest feminist works of literature; and Sarojini Naidu, the freedom fighter and 'Nightingale of India' whose poetry echoed her political desire for Indian independence.Including writers from across a wide spectrum of disciplines including poets, journalists, novelists, essayists and diarists, this is an alternative gynocentric history of literature that will surprise, empower, and leave you with a reading list a mile long.*The number of Nobel-prize-winning women.

Greedy Girl's Diet

Nadia Sawalha
Authors:
Nadia Sawalha

Nadia Sawalha has always loved cooking, but until recently rarely ate her own food. Like a lot of women, whilst her family tucked in to delicious dishes, she nibbled on diet food. Later, ravenously hungry, she binged, somehow convincing herself that the calories didn't count if nobody saw her eating them. Two years ago, after decades of fluctuating weight, she decided enough was enough: * She wasn't going to start a new diet tomorrow. * She wasn't going to start a new diet ever again. * She was going to eat normal meals with her family and, most importantly, she was going to do so for the rest of her life. Since then, Nadia has lost and kept off 31/2 stone, by simply throwing away the diet books. Instead she shaved off the hidden calories, all without anyone noticing. A little less oil here, a different cut of meat there; brown rice instead of white, more herbs, spices and colour; and a dessert every day! The result is The Greedy Girl's Diet, which is packed with more than 100 delicious recipes, and Nadia's invaluable tips and advice on how to achieve a slim, fit and healthy body.

Salt is Essential

Shaun Hill
Authors:
Shaun Hill

Food needs salt. The quantity is a matter of personal taste but some presence is essential and little is more disappointing from the eating perspective than a plate of food that looks fabulous and tastes of very little. It shows the cook's priorities are all wrong, that too much television cookery has been watched and not enough tasting and enjoyment indulged in.' So says Shaun Hill, who in this engaging exploration of his 50 years as a chef, brings his wealth of experience to the table, sharing what he has learnt so that the home cook can create truly remarkable dishes. Never one to shy away from controversy, he covers everything from why local and seasonal are not necessarily indicators of quality, to why soy beans are best left for cattle feed and Budapest is paradise for the greedy. The recipes range from Warm Rock Oysters with Spring Onion Butter Sauce to Pork in Shirtsleeves and Buttermilk Pudding with Cardamom. And although his commentary is undeniably witty, it's Shaun's knowledge and expert guidance that makes this book an invaluable tome for anyone who takes their food (but not themselves) seriously. 'This is a book you need to own; a lifetime's hard work in the kitchen distilled into sensible brevity. Shaun is a friend and a great cook.' Rick Stein

Chef on a Diet: Loving Your Body and Your Food

Sophie Michell
Authors:
Sophie Michell

They say you should never trust a skinny chef - but what if that skinny chef held the secret to losing weight without compromising on foodie pleasure? In her new book, executive chef Sophie Michell reveals the recipes she herself has used to lose weight despite spending all day, every day, surrounded by food. Sophie has developed this diet with an emphasis on flavour, so you'll never feel like you're missing out, even as you drop the pounds. The recipes have been carefully formulated to provide you with essential proteins and nutrients, and will leave you full of energy, with your taste buds satisfied and your body slimmer. With everything from smoothies and juices to brunches, packed lunches and impressive yet achievable mains, this diet allows you to really embrace your love of food. Enjoy a breakfast of Avocado and Chipotle Frittata, a dinner of Crisp Duck Wings with Miso Glaze and Kimchi Salad, and an array of tempting sweet dishes such as Hazelnut and Dark Chocolate Cake. The recipes are so tasty you'll want to keep cooking them long after you reach your goal weight, helping you to maintain it - as Sophie says, a successful diet is 'a life choice, not something you endure to lose the pounds. ' With the focus on flavour and enjoyment rather than calorie counting, it's time to diet like a chef.

Rhapsody in Green: A Novelist, an Obsession, a Laughably Small Excuse for a Garden

Charlotte Mendelson
Authors:
Charlotte Mendelson

Gardening can be viewed as a largely pointless hobby, but the evangelical zeal and camaraderie it generates is unique. Charlotte Mendelson is perhaps unusually passionate about it. For despite her superficially normal existence, despite the fact that she has only six square metres of grotty urban soil and a few pots, she has a secret life. She is an extreme gardener, an obsessive, an addict. And like all addicts, she wants to spread the joy. Her garden may look like a nasty drunk old man's mini-allotment, chaotic, virtually flowerless, with weird recycling and nowhere to sit. When honoured friends are shown it, they tend to laugh. However, it is actually a tiny jungle, a minuscule farm, a wildly uneconomical experiment in intensive edible cultivation, on which she grows a taste of perhaps a hundred kinds of delicious fruits and odd vegetables. It is a source of infinite happiness and deep peace. It looks completely bonkers. Arguably, it's the most expensive, time-consuming, undecorative and self-indulgent way to grow a salad ever invented, but when tired or sad or cross it never fails to delight.

Ikigai

Yukari Mitsuhashi
Authors:
Yukari Mitsuhashi

Ikigai is a traditional Japanese concept that embodies happiness in living. It is, essentially, the reason that you get up in the morning. This book is about finding your ikigai - identifying your purpose or passion and using this knowledge to achieve greater happiness in your life. Your ikigai doesn't have to be some grand ambition or highly noble life's purpose - it can be something simple and humble, like tending your garden or walking your dog.Having grown up in Japan, Yukari Mitsuhashi understands first hand what ikigai means to Japanese people. Now living in Los Angeles, she has written this book to introduce the traditional concept to a new audience. This is not a 'one size fits all' book. Instead, Ikigai encourages you to look at the details of your life and appreciate the everyday moments as you learn to identify your own personal ikigai. The book includes case studies from a range of people sharing their ikigai, from athletes to writers and business people. With its refreshingly simple philosophy and liberating concepts, this beautifully presented book will be a guide you will return to again and again.
