By Karen Triedman

  • Paperback
  • £24.99

The professional's complete guide to colour, examining colour science and theory, as well as its application in interiors, graphic and product design, as well as digital media

Colour is one of the most complex elements of design and it is also what people respond to first on an emotional level, whether they are surveying a restaurant interior or browsing an online catalogue. An in-depth understanding of colour is one of the most important and useful assets available to a visual professional. Working successfully with colour in a global community involves understanding colour theory and psychology, as well as geographical and historical reference. This information is covered thoroughly, with clear and precise explanations and examples. Colour: The Professional's Guide is comprehensive, offering informative techniques, examples, inspiration and, above all, exemplary solutions to fit the designer's every need, whatever their discipline. Beautifully illustrated with over 300 colour images, this guide removes the grey areas from the full colour world of contemporary design, providing designers from all disciplines with everything they need to become true, confident colourists.

Why You Like This Photo

Brian Dilg
Authors:
Brian Dilg

What you see is very different from what you think you see... There's a lot going on behind the scenes when you like a photograph. Maybe something is tricking your brain into believing a static image is alive with motion. But how? Or maybe you're being drawn in by a rich, high-contrast subject. But what's so great about really black blacks and really white whites? And if the composition is subverting your expectations, where did those expectations come from in the first place? To answer these questions, international award-winning cinematographer Brian Dilg blends photographic fundamentals like exposure, focus, and composition with the latest developments in psychology, cognitive neuroscience, and evolutionary biology, in a thrilling exploration of how a photo works, how your brain perceives it, and why you like the result.
