Judith Miller is one of the most respected authorities in design and antiques. Chairs featured are from all over the world. More than 400 colour specially shot photographs all on location.

The chair is the most ubiquitous design element in the domestic environment, and almost everyone who has tackled the world of design has ended up designing one. In Chairs Judith Miller scrutinises more than 100 of her favourite chairs reflecting on their iconic status, designers, historical facts, overall style, design details and ergonomic properties. More than 100 chairs have been specially photographed on location and are featured in chronological date order, ranging from early antiques such as the 1680 Wainscot Chair and the 1740 Louis XV Chaise Longue, to modern day collectables such as Marc Newson's 1988 'Embryo' and Tom Dixon's 2007 'Wingback'. This is not a catalogue; each chair has earned its place as an emblem of style, status, craft and art and is celebrated in this beautifully designed book.

Biographical Notes

Judith Miller began collecting antiques in the 1960s while a student at Edinburgh University. Fascinated by the inexpensive plates she bought in the city's junk shops she began to research their history in books and auction catalogues. She has since become one of the world's leading experts in antiques. From 1979 until 1988, Judith served as co-founder of the international best-seller Miller's Antiques Price Guide and has since written more than 80 books, many of which are held in high regard by collectors and dealers. Judith is a regular lecturer and contributor to numerous newspapers and magazines, including BBC Homes & Antiques and House & Garden, and appears regularly on radio and TV, most notably as co-host for the popular BBC series The House Detectives and is an expert on the BBC Antiques Roadshow. She regularly lectures in the US to Art & Antiques Charity events and is a regular lecturer to Appraisers societies, the AAA in New York and recently the IAS in Fort Worth Texas. Mini Weapons of Mass Destruction

John Austin
Authors:
John Austin

We've come a long way from the Peashooter Era: with the advent of modern household products and office supplies - foldback clips, clothespins, rubber bands, ballpoint pens, toothpicks, paper clips and plastic utensils - the everyday junk drawer can hold all the materials needed to create pocket-sized weaponry. Whether you're slowing dying of boredom in a stuffy office, plotting revenge on your older siblings or simply looking for a wonderful way to kill some time, this book is for you. Toy designer John Austin provides detailed, step-by-step instructions for each project, including materials and ammo lists, clear pictures, and construction tips, for mayhem-loving MacGyvers. The 35 devices include catapults, slingshots, darts, crossbows, and combustion shooters. Build a tiny trebuchet from paper clips and a D-cell battery. Wrap a penny in a string of paper caps to create a surprisingly impressive "bomb." Several of the projects even include variations where combatants mount laser pointer sights to their shooters to increase their accuracy. The instructions are simple so that anyone can make these wacky innovations in minutes whilst also learning about mechanics and physics in a fun, hands-on way.

The Photographer's Eye

Michael Freeman
Authors:
Michael Freeman

Design is the single most important factor in creating a successful photograph. The ability to see the potential for a strong picture and then organize the graphic elements into an effective, compelling composition has always been one of the key skills in making photographs. Of course, digital photography has brought a new, exciting aspect to design first because the instant feedback from a digital camera allows immediate appraisal and improvement; and second because image-editing tools make it possible to alter and enhance the design after the shutter has been pressed. This has had a profound effect on the way digital photographers take pictures. The Photographers Eye shows how anyone can develop an eye for seeing great digital photos. The book explores all the traditional approaches to composition and design, but crucially, it also addresses the new digital technique of shooting in the knowledge that a picture will later be edited, manipulated, or montaged to result in a final image that may be very different from the one seen in the viewfinder.
