Trust No Aunty

By Maria Qamar

  • Hardback
  • £10.00

Aunty-survivor and creator of the hit Instagram account Hatecopy, Maria Qamar is here to remind you: Trust No Aunty.

Aunty is a term of endearment (and sometimes, insult) used to describe an older woman. The Aunty is a cross-cultural phenomenon that isn't limited to family members; she could be a neighbour, a family friend, or just some lady on the bus who wants throw some casual black magic your way. Most commonly featured in Indian soap operas, an Aunty is a feisty and dramatic powerhouse of a woman who enters your house and plans to take over your life. They are at family parties or friendly get-togethers with your mother, finding ways to make your life difficult, trying to get you married to their sons and telling you to lose weight while simultaneously trying to feed you a second dinner.

We've all experienced 'Aunty interference' which has hindered our social growth and embarrassed us in front of our friends and cool cousins. If you thought you were alone in dealing with the meddling, oddly comforting and overwhelming attention of the Aunties in your life, then this book is for you.

Biographical Notes

Maria Qamar, otherwise known as Hatecopy (@hatecopy) is an artist living and working in Toronto. She was raised a first generation Canadian in a traditional South Asian home where a job in the arts was typically looked down upon as an "unstable career path." Soon after realizing there was no other option, she fought to pursue the arts anyway and started her Instagram account Hatecopy (63k followers) in February 2015, illustrating the hilarious insights of diaspora culture and the significance of Aunties in Indian culture.

And even when life throws Flamingo a curveball, he is always ready to embrace the unknown and jump straight in.A gorgeous little gift book of motivational sayings and hilarious axioms, Be a Flamingo is a perfect pink pick-me-up gift for a friend who needs a confidence boost, or great as an impulse self-purchase when you feel you need to start tooting your own horn a little louder. Judith Miller
Authors:
Judith Miller

'...one of the most friendly, easygoing and instructive books on the design movement' Chicago TribuneArts & Crafts is one of the most influential design movements of all time, beginning in the late 19th century and still being explored by designers today. The Arts & Crafts ethos - rejecting mass production and industrialization in favour of individualism, simplicity, honest craftsmanship, respect for materials and good design - had a massive impact on the design of the early 20th century and transformed design sensibilities globally. This invaluable guide covers furniture, ceramics, silver and metalware, glass, textiles, jewellery, books and posters, and includes fascinating profiles of key designers such as William Morris, the Stickleys, Liberty & Co, Tiffany Studios, George Ohr, Rookwood and many more. It comes with a pictorial design directory, price ranges and a wealth of essential information for collectors and anyone wishing to follow William Morris's golden rule of Arts & Crafts: 'Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.'
