Miller's 20th Century Design (compact format)

The definitive illustrated sourcebook

By Judith Miller

  • Hardback
  • £30.00

The designs of the 20th century are now 'in'. Sales internationally are growing massively and record prices are commonplace. The market needs a visual guide with plenty of information - to put the design maestros in context and show the broad range available to collectors. This guide is the perfect introduction to this new collecting field, the book explains the difference between the movements, what influenced them and who the major designers were. If you look in interiors and homes magazines, less is more. This will be the main focus of design for the foreseeable future and is not just a short term trend. Is Le Corbusier the new Chippendale? Is Charles Eames the new Duncan Phyffe? Get the inside track on which designs are the true Classics.

Modern design is beautiful, functional, idiosyncratic, and still relatively affordable. Designs that were once thought of as too avant-garde for functional use, are now appreciated for the bold thinking and originality that went into making them. However, many of these objects are just being discovered by collectors, and their craftsmanship and importance is only now being measured. The first book in a new series of specialist guides which will tell you everything you need to know about a subject. With in-depth analysis and a comprehensive selection of images they will tell you all you ever need to know on a selected topic.

Lagom

Linnea Dunne
Authors:
Linnea Dunne

Lagom (pronounced 'lar-gom') has no equivalent in the English language but is loosely translated as 'not too little, not too much, just right'. It is widely believed that the word comes from the Viking term 'laget om', for when a mug of mead was passed around a circle and there was just enough for everyone to get a sip. But while the anecdote may hit the nail on the head, the true etymology of the word points to an old form of the word 'lag', which means 'law'.Far from restrictive, lagom is a liberating concept, praising the idea that anything more that 'just enough' is a waste of time. Crucially it also comes with a selflessness and core belief of responsibility and common good. By living lagom you can live a happier and more balanced life, reduce your environmental impact, improve your work-life balance, free your home from clutter, enjoy good food the Swedish way, grow your own and learn to forage, and cherish the relationships with those you love.

More Time to Think

Nancy Kline
Authors:
Nancy Kline

The quality of everything we do depends on the quality of the thinking we do first. The leaders, professionals, parents and teachers who understand this are at the top of their fields and inspire some of the finest independent thinking in their environments. In More Time to Think, Nancy Kline shares ten effective ways to help people think for themselves with rigour, imagination, courage and grace. From learning that the mind works best in the presence of a question (so never be afraid to risk being wrong) and that a key factor in the quality of a person's thinking is how they are treated by the people with them while they are thinking, to the importance of appreciation and of facing what you have been denying, Nancy Kline shows how to create a successful Thinking Environment, whether for two people or a larger group.Nancy created and pioneered the development of The Thinking Environment and is Founder and President of Time To Think. A published author and public speaker, she also teaches Time To Think courses, leads the Time To Think Faculty and delivers keynote presentations around the world.Time To Think began in 1984 and grew out of Nancy's consulting and teaching work near Washington, DC, where she had served as a Founding Director of The Thornton Friends School for twelve years and as Director of The Leadership Institute for six years. She is a Fellow of Ashridge Management College, UK, and the International Listening Association's Listener of the Year 2010.Nancy was born and raised in New Mexico and lives in England with her husband, Christopher Spence.(p) 2017 Octopus Publishing Group

At Home with Plants

Ian Drummond, Kara O'Reilly
Authors:
Ian Drummond, Kara O'Reilly

Houseplants are hot, and creative interior planting is becoming increasingly easy to achieve. The new wave of unusual and dramatic indoor plants is as much about décor and statement as greenery. Used aesthetically, as a focal point and sculptural element in interior design, indoor gardening is not just about possessing or growing a plant, but about using it as an accessory combined with other objects to create a particular style and mood. In this much-needed book, Ian and Kara show you how to transform your home with plants and tells you which plants will work best where and how to care for them. From strikingly geometric terrariums to pretty hanging baskets, practical herb pots and colourful window displays, this book is packed full of exciting and gorgeous ideas. Specially commissioned photography by Nick Pope throughout proves that bringing the outdoors in really is the best form of interior design.
