Miller's Costume Jewellery
By Judith Miller
The past decade has seen costume jewelry become the glittering star of vintage fashion. No longer the poor relation of precious pieces, values are rising as increasing numbers of collectors see the quality of the design and craftsmanship. The market is ready for a new costume jewelry book, one that shows these dazzling pieces to the best advantage and celebrates them. Costume jewelry is constantly in the news - American first lady Michelle Obama wore vintage pieces at the inauguration; Sarah Jessica Parker wears vintage costume jewelry all the time, fashion magazines feature costume jewelry - vintage and new - in every issue.
Chanel, Dior, Schiaparelli, Trifari, Coro, Miriam Haskell, Stanley Hagler ...the greats of 20th century costume jewellery trip off the tongue like a parade of the best in fashion. Costume - or non-precious - jewellery has been worn since ancient times. In a comprehensive introduction, Judith Miller discusses how these early pieces influenced the development of costume jewellery in the 20th century: from the Great Depression, when many could only afford glass stones, to the fantasy pastes of the 1950s which bore no resemblance to precious gems. Biographies of the great designers and companies (Chanel, Dior, Schiaparelli, Trifari, Coro and more) will be joined by information on lesser-known names and unsigned pieces. Special features will explore subjects such as Art Deco jewelry, costume jewellery in Hollywood films and unsigned pieces. It will look at the lives of the designers, their inspirations as well as showing hundreds of beautiful designs and the marks to look for.
Judith Miller began collecting in the 1960s while a student at Edinburgh University in Scotland. She has since extended and reinforced her knowledge of antiques and design through international research, becoming one of the world's leading experts in the field. Her expertise includes historic interiors. In 1979 Judith co-founded the international best-seller Miller's Antiques Price Guide and has since written more than 100 books, which are held in high regard by collectors and dealers.
