Authors:
Michael Schuster

The first edition of Essential Winetasting won numerous prizes for Best Wine Book of the Year immediately after it was published. This new edition has 20% more pages, the whole volume (in particular the central section on Grapes and Their Wines and The Tastings) has been substantially rewritten and updated, and there are numerous new illustrations. The maps have been completely revised and they all have up-to-date statistics for the 2014 vintage. The nine practical Tastings have been redesigned, each now with an initial advice panel on preparatory reading from the book, plus a subsequent quiz panel as a reinforcement. The See Also boxes remain, on almost every spread, as a cross reference system for the whole volume, a uniquely powerful learning tool. At the more advanced tasting level there is a completely new and detailed Quality Calibration Tasting on perceiving and recognizing quality, and a comprehensive section on Blind Tasting in all its forms. Additional new material covers Organic, Biodynamic and Natural Wines; Alcohol; Wine Gadgets; and Wine at Home and On the Table. Above all the book offers a particularly clear and precise means of teaching yourself how to taste and how to get more out of your wine, whatever your level.

Hugh Johnson on Wine

Hugh Johnson
Authors:
Hugh Johnson

'On Wine-which brings together dozens of "articles, reviews, and introductions," from titles as various as Vogue, Decanter, The Sunday Times Wine Club newsletter Wine Times, and the journal you have in your hands, as well as snippets from Johnson's bestselling books-has many moments where the writing transcends the ostensible subject matter.'The World of Fine WineOne of the world's great authorities on wine, Hugh Johnson has been writing on the subject (among others) for almost six decades. This selection chronicles his personal take on developments that have revolutionised the industry for half a century and more.Johnson's prose describes as no one else can the endlessly fascinating characters and landscapes of the wine world. He tells of setting sail with sybarites and braving the perfect storm, he debates at length the Pleasure Principle, lip-smacks through decadent dinners, teaches and learns in Tokyo and files breathless dispatches from Beijing. He bids a poignant farewell to the loveliest vintages, decries peremptory judgement and urges the Slow Food philosophy; falls in love (again), this time with Tokaji, tells warm winter tales through a vintage port and sets out a summer picnic at the source of the Seine - all the while dryly annotating the scribbles of his younger self with contemporary marginal hindsights. This thoughtful, illuminating collection will delight not only lovers of wine, food, history and travel but also anyone who enjoys the intoxicating power of words.

Complete Bordeaux

Stephen Brook
Authors:
Stephen Brook

The core of this book is an assessment of more than 1,000 significant wine producers in Bordeaux. For each property Stephen considers its history, viticulture, vinification, wine styles and vintages. But this is more than simply a producer-by-producer reference work; Stephen analyses the information he presents in order to give a clear picture of the current trends in the region. This is an honest account of a wine region which is marvellous in parts, underperforming in others and preoccupied with its place in a new global wine market.
