Award-winning author and whisky expert Dave Broom has been writing about whisky for 25 years as a journalist and author. Hugh Johnson

Hugh Johnson is the world's pre-eminent writer on wine. First published in 1977, his Pocket Wine Book sells hundreds of thousands of copies a year. His winning formula of insight, critical appraisal of the world of wine, plus valuable vintage news and wine recommendations has been often-imitated but never bettered. With the publication of his first book, Wine, Johnson established himself at the age of twenty-seven as the most refreshing and authoritative voice on the subject. During the past four decades he has written books that have become landmarks on the subject, including his classic The World Atlas of Wine, co-authored with Jancis Robinson, his Wine Companion, first published in 2003, The Story of Wine and Hugh Johnson on Wine. Jancis Robinson

Jancis Robinson is described by Decanter magazine as "the most respected wine critic and journalist in the world". Jancis writes daily for her website, jancisrobinson.com (awarded the first ever Wine Website of the Year accolade in the Louis Roederer International Wine Writers Awards 2010), weekly for the Financial Times, and bimonthly for a column that is syndicated around the world. But many know her best for her hugely admired reference books; in addition to co-authoring The World Atlas of Wine, she is editor of The Oxford Companion to Wine and co-author of Wine Grapes. Her most recent book is also her shortest, a practical guide to the essentials of wine, The 24-Hour Wine Expert. Critically acclaimed as the "woman who makes the wine world gulp when she speaks" (USA Today) and "our favourite wine writer" (Playboy), Jancis was the first person outside the wine trade to qualify as a Master of Wine, in 1984. She was awarded an OBE in 2003 by Her Majesty the Queen, on whose cellar she now advises. In one week in April 2016 she was presented with France's Officier du Mérite Agricole, the German VDP's highest honour (the golden pin, presented by previous recipient Hugh Johnson) and, in the US, her fourth James Beard Award.She loves and lives for wine in all its glorious diversity, generally favouring balance and subtlety over sheer mass.

Margaret Rand is the former editor of Wine Magazine, Wine & Spirit International and Whisky Magazine. She now writes for The World of Fine Wine, Drinks Business, Decanter and Imbibe among others, and is general editor of Hugh Johnson's Pocket Wine Book. She has won several Roederer and Lanson awards.

Michael Schuster

Michael Schuster trained in tasting in Bordeaux. In the early 1980s he helped create an award-winning wine retail business, and since then he has worked as an independent writer, consultant and lecturer, running his own wine school in north London with his wife Monika, a Cordon Bleu trained chef. His tastings range from his foundation Beginners Course, to much sought after events each May, where he coaches students in the demanding practicalities of Master of Wine Blind Tasting.For many years he sat on the board of The Wine Society, one of Britain's foremost mail order merchants, and during its first ten years he chaired the Burgundy panel at Decanter's World Wine Awards. He is a regular contributor to The World of Fine Wine, writing their annual Bordeaux en primeur report, for articles in which he was shortlisted for Feature Writer of the Year in the Louis Roederer International Wine Writers' Awards 2008. He lectures to amateurs and professionals in the UK and abroad and in 2002 he was elected to the Academie Internationale du Vin.

Neil Beckett

Neil Beckett's interest in wine stretches back for many years, so much so that his MBA dissertation was on White Burgundy. He has spent time in Burgundy, and has also qualified for the WSET Diploma, graduating with distinction. As well as working for wine shipping company Richards Walford, he has also worked at Harpers Wine & Spirit Weekly where he was a contributing editor for many years and in 2004 became the first editor of the critically-acclaimed, leading wine magazine, The World of Wine, on which he works with Hugh Johnson and Andrew Jefford. He is one of two UK tasters on the Grand Jury Européen du vin and his wine writing has won prizes.

Following nearly a decade in the wine trade, he was a senior editor, critic, and tasting director for Wine & Spirits, and his writings on sherry, Champagne, and other wines have appeared in publications such as The World of Fine Wine, The Art of Eating, Decanter and the San Francisco Chronicle. He lives in Champagne.

Stephen Brook

Stephen Brook is a leading writer on wine and gastronomy. His previous books include Sauternes, The Wines of Germany, and The Wines of California, which won the Prix Lanson, Glenfiddich and Veuve Clicquot awards. He is also the author of Pauillac and Bordeaux: People, Power and Politics, which won the Veuve Clicquot and ICP awards. He revised the lastest edition of Hugh Johnson's Wine Companion.
