If you're learning or gifting a camera, you should pair it with this book! For $20 on Amazon, this incredibly thorough and thick book reminds me of my photography class in high school. I almost went nuts as I opened the book and saw yet another photographer I had met - Dixie Dixon giving some commentary on fashion photography! We met at a WPPI in line waiting to see Elizabeth Messina and traded business cards and talked for a little bit. I knew she was already talented and then she became a Nikon ambassador and taught at WPPI! I was like wow this girl just did it! The book gives every photography jargon and what "shooting at the hip" means and white balance as well as photo editing. There is always something to learn and I believe when it comes to photography, we're never done learning. The must-have book for EVERY photographer. — Diana Elizabeth, Diana Elizabeth

The Midlife Kitchen

Mimi Spencer, Sam Rice
Authors:
Mimi Spencer, Sam Rice

As featured in The Times and The Daily Mail. Are you at a point in your life where health is becoming more of a priority? Are you confused by ever-changing headlines that contrive to make the simple act of eating a peril rather than a pleasure? The Midlife Kitchen has the answers.Midlife is not a time to be concerned with food fads and foibles, but rather a glorious opportunity to wrest back control of your eating in the interests of health, happiness and a long life. Taste must certainly come first, but with health firmly snapping at its heels, underpinned by well-established nutritional common sense. Busy lives require simple, sustaining recipes that incorporate health-giving ingredients without too much fanfare or fuss. This book is not about 'clean-eating' or super foods, detoxing or restriction. Instead, it is about building up a balanced and diverse diet, with less sugar, better fat and good carbs. Alongside each recipe is the Midlife Kitchen emblem, the star anise. With each of the eight seeds representing a specific Midlife Health category - such as Hormone Harmony; Mind, Memory, Mood; or Heart Health - authors Sam and Mimi are able to provide simple nutritional information. Health tips explain the benefits of certain ingredients, while 'Why We Love It' sections explore the advantages of cooking each dish. Midlife Must-Haves show how to create homemade essentials such as Midlife Grown-up Granola, Midlife Power Porridge and Midlife Sweetener. From Seared Sirloin on Pan-roasted Veg to The Mother of All Greek Salads, Nurture Bircher to Three-ginger Fire Cake, the recipes in this book come together to create a vibrant menu bursting with mouth-watering flavours.

Philip's Complete Guide to Stargazing

Robin Scagell
Authors:
Robin Scagell

In a new flexi-paperback format, Philip's Complete Guide to Stargazing is an inspiring introduction to astronomy, providing all the information you need to explore the night sky. This is a comprehensive guide to an increasingly popular leisure pursuit.Author Robin Scagell first introduces the wonders of the night sky and explains how and why the sky changes during the night and through the seasons. He describes the various items of equipment you can use (binoculars, telescopes and accessories), and gives practical advice on what to choose and what you can expect to see. There are plenty of tips, too, for observing just with the naked eye.The book continues with chapters devoted to the Moon, the Solar System, the stars and deep sky objects, illustrated with photographs and observational drawings made by talented amateur astronomers, as well as spectacular images returned by spacecraft or taken by large telescopes. The month-by-month guide to the constellations features maps showing the constellations on view each month from both northern and southern hemispheres, and is applicable to any year and any place on Earth.A complete set of star charts presents the whole sky in a series of maps that show stars down to magnitude 5.5. These maps are drawn with black stars on a white background, so that observers can pencil their own observations on to the charts. Opposite each map is a 'photo-realistic' image which shows how the same portion of the sky typically appears to the eye.Completing the book is an illustrated A-Z dictionary of astronomy, covering the planets, stars and galaxies, cosmology, amateur astronomy and professional observatories, space exploration, famous astronomers, scientific terms, theories and much more, and is illustrated with photographs, artworks and diagrams.Philip's Complete Guide to Stargazing is an invaluable reference source for astronomers of all levels.
