Brian Dilg
Authors:
Brian Dilg

What you see is very different from what you think you see... There's a lot going on behind the scenes when you like a photograph. Maybe something is tricking your brain into believing a static image is alive with motion. But how? Or maybe you're being drawn in by a rich, high-contrast subject. But what's so great about really black blacks and really white whites? And if the composition is subverting your expectations, where did those expectations come from in the first place? To answer these questions, international award-winning cinematographer Brian Dilg blends photographic fundamentals like exposure, focus, and composition with the latest developments in psychology, cognitive neuroscience, and evolutionary biology, in a thrilling exploration of how a photo works, how your brain perceives it, and why you like the result.

What Would Freud Do?

Sarah Tomley
Authors:
Sarah Tomley

What Would Freud Do? uses the key ideas of more than 80 psychological thinkers, past and present, to shine new light onto today's everyday problems. Ever wondered what a great therapist like Freud or Jung would have to say about your horrible boss, your phone-checking addiction or an occasional wish to cheat on your partner? Ever wished someone would explain why you sometimes act like an idiot just when you want to look good, or generally keep doing things you don't really want to do?From Erich Fromm on how to find Mr/Mrs Right, to Jaak Panksepp on road rage and Magda Arnold on how to deal with 'banter', these theorists have intriuging suggestions for ways to see and do things differently. Divided into five sections, including 'What am I like?', and 'Why am I acting like this?', other questions include:-'My family's a nightmare -- shall I cut them off?'-'Is my partner lying to me?'-'Why do I keep buying the same brand all the time?'-'How can I stop people unfriending me on social media?'-'Why do I lie when she says "Does my bum look big in this?"'With Sarah Tomley's enlightening commentary throughout, this book provides the answers to the most deep and meaningful (or, indeed, shallow and meaningless) questions that you have ever pondered. A pocket guide to facing the hurdles and obstacles of life, with the advice of all the greatest psychologists at your fingertips.

Huey Morgan's Rebel Heroes

Huey Morgan
Authors:
Huey Morgan

The defining sounds of popular music - blues, rock 'n' roll, punk, hip-hop - were shaped and driven by rebel voices: whether that was Robert Johnson and Billie Holiday in the 1920-40s, or the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Joe Strummer in the 1960s and 70s. Truly ground- and rule-breaking voices have been drowned out by pop-by-numbers acts in more recent years, and in Rebel Heroes, Huey Morgan investigates where music started to lose its soul, and why the lessons of those renegade spirits of yesteryear are still so vital. The book is steeped in Huey's love for, and knowledge of, music and is full of personal anecdotes and stories of some of the greatest musicians to have graced us with their talent.(p) 2015 Octopus Publishing Group
